Biographical sketch
Dr. Jessica Jones is the Branch Chief for the Microbiological Hazards Science Branch in the Division of Seafood Science and Technology, OFS, CFSAN. The DSST is located in the FDA’s Gulf Coast Seafood Laboratory (GCSL) in Dauphin Island, Alabama. GCSL is the Center’s primary seafood safety research group. In her current role, Jessica is involved with multiple areas of seafood safety research including pathogenic Vibrio species, enteric viral pathogens (norovirus and hepatitis A virus), assessment of human sewage impacts on shellfish growing areas, and microbial aspects of seafood decomposition.
Prior to becoming the MHSB Chief, Jessica was a Research Microbiologist at GCSL. The primary focus of her FDA research was development, validation, and application of molecular methods for detection and characterization of seafood-borne Vibrio spp.. Jessica has published over 40 peer-reviewed works, including research articles and book chapters, in this subject area. She participates in several internal FDA groups, including the Vibrio Assistance Review Board, Growing Area Review Board, and the Shellfish Steering Committee. Jessica also represents FDA on multiple committees in the Interstate Shellfish Sanitation Conference, as part of the cooperative program.
