Biographical sketch
I am an estuarine and coastal ecologist who focuses on the cycling of elements such as nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus and sulfur. I am particularly interested in the relationship between microbial processes and primary producers such as phytoplankton, benthic microalgae and seagrasses. Much of my research is applied, examining the effect of human activities. I work with NGOs, federal, state and local agencies.
My current research includes water quality and nitrogen cycling in seagrass beds and estuaries, the impact of artificial reefs on primary production, nutrient cycling and fish production, and the effects of oysters on water quality and biogeochemistry. I teach classes on Aquatic Botany, Coastal Marine Ecology, and From Wastelands to Wetlands: Our Changing View of Coastal Marshes.
