June 25 update: The 2020 Bays and Bayous Symposium will be a virtual event.

The Bays and Bayous Symposium steering committee has made the difficult decision of hosting a virtual symposium in 2020. The committee made this decision after reviewing input for past Bays and Bayous participants and acknowledging that we are unable to predict the level of social distancing that may be required during Bays and Bayous. More details will follow.

April 15 update from the Bays and Bayous Steering Committee:

The 2020 Bayous and Bayous Steering Committee recognizes the uncertainties everyone is facing as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. At this time, we are hopeful that the symposium will continue as planned, but we will adapt to the situation as we learn more. For now, abstract submissions will open May 1 as originally planned. Registration, which was scheduled to open May 1, will be delayed for a few weeks. The steering committee will explore other options for hosting Bays and Bayous if we cannot have an in-person gathering. More information will be shared in the coming weeks.

The Bays and Bayous Symposium will be held Dec. 1-3. The theme for the virtual event is "Sound Science, Sound Policy: A 2020 Vision for the Future." Bays and Bayous will begin after noon on Tuesday, Dec. 1, and end before noon on Thursday, Dec. 3.

The symposium focuses on (but is not limited to) coastal science research, education and outreach in the northern Gulf of Mexico. Scientists from universities, NGOs and government agencies share their research findings at the event, and leaders from coastal municipalities showcase their resilience and conservation efforts. Educators and extension professionals also present their research and successful outreach efforts. Popular topics at the symposium include oil spill impacts, habitat management and restoration, climate and hazard resilience, living resources, and water quality and supply.

Typically, the symposium includes 150-200 poster and oral presentations, and the event is known as a networking opportunity for the 350-450 coastal science professionals and students who attend. The symposium also includes special awards for top student presenters.

This site will be updated throughout the planning process as more information becomes available.

Sponsorship Opportunities

The Bays and Bayous Symposium provides an opportunity for the community to learn about the state of our coastal environment. This symposium brings together a broad array of scientists, resource managers, industry representatives, business leaders and policy makers from throughout the southeast to promote information exchange and networking related to coastal issues that impact the long-term health of our coastal resources.

The theme of the 2020 Bays and Bayous Symposium is "Sound Science, Sound Policy: A 2020 Vision for the Future." This three-day event will include presentations, topical workshops and discussion by local resource managers, scientists and active participants in watershed stewardship. Presenters will share the best available science of the condition of the lands, waters and living resources essential to the resilience of coastal communities in the northern Gulf of Mexico region. The Bays and Bayous Symposium showcases the latest information on the opportunities and challenges facing our region's coastal habitats, marine resources, coastal communities and economies, and environmental literacy.
